In response to Rafa Esparza's solo exhibition "they spent their time doing nothing. they let intimacy fuse them" artists Allison Wyper (March 29th) and Yann Novak (April 12th) will create movement and sound based works for the duration of the museum's operating hours on two separate occasions. Also available during both events will be the immaculately composed baumtest art quarterly, issue #2.
Indiegogo update: heading toward the homestretch!
We're rounding the bend toward the final three weeks of our Indiegogo campaign to take WITNESS to Montreal in June, and we need YOU to share this campaign via email and social media!
Here's the easy link: www.igg.me/at/witness2014
If we have learned anything from this campaign, it's that you NEVER KNOW WHO IS GOING TO CONTRIBUTE. And usually, it's someone who doesn't have much who is most willing to give. That's how we get by--by putting a few dollars in each other's pockets when we need them, knowing that when we are in need, someone will do the same for us.
So thanks for your support, in all its forms.
xo,
Allison and Kai

Dino Dinco reflects upon "Encounters"
It has been my pleasure for nearly two years to participate in monthly Encounters (improvisational performances, not intended for an audience) at the invitation of artist Mariel Carranza. These events, typically involving between 5-8 (mostly, but not all, performance) artists, are usually private, and revolve around a core group with whom I have become very close, and in whom I have enormous trust.
So... it is weird to share anything about Encounters publicly. But, as we have been gradually practicing more and more in public (preparing for an upcoming performance at a well known local venue) it is fitting that DINO DINCO has released this wonderful reflection of our first Encounter (July 2012). It is an excerpt from his forthcoming book on performance of the West Coast, which I cannot wait to read.
You can read Dino's text in the last issue of Dance Theater Journal (UK) or online at http://tessawills.com/under-the-hollywood-sign/.
First person accounts of performances I've never seen (Pt 3)
The final of three performative writings in which I adopt an imaginary time traveling avatar self that witnesses one-on-one performances that I have never seen, is now live at The Present Tense! Though fictional, this account is based on research, and includes quotes taken from a paper by performer Susan Kozel. Take a peek:
I stand, arms crossed, a couple feet from the bed, watching her, letting this live painting (literally) breathe for a few moments before I join her. I’ve been invited to lie on the bed “with her” if I desire, and while I’m there, within the frame of the bed, she will be able to see me, remotely, through a live video camera on the gallery ceiling, in a kind of horizontal “teleconference.” (I giggled when I thought of that joke, out in the lobby, but now it seems slightly disrespectful.) In the darkness of the periphery I am invisible to her. She displays herself for me. I consume her, giving nothing in return. I collect her beauty and store it up in my memory for later. I could write a song about the way she looks, another courtly lover wooing from afar, impotent and selfish. But that is not the invitation.
WITNESS is going to Montreal... and we need your support!
Kai Hazelwood an I have been invited to perform my one-on-one piece Witness in June 2014 at the Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics' Encuentro, and we are looking for community support to make the trip to Montreal!
Our goal is to raise at least $4000 USD by April 3rd, to cover airfare, hotel, meals, and insurance for the 8-day festival/conference. As a participant you will receive exclusive updates from the road, and a range of tantalizing perks...
